Reddit does not sell karma. Anyone offering “karma points” as a line item is reselling something else. The two things that actually change the number on a profile are votes on content that profile posted, or logging into an account that already collected those votes.

How Reddit karma actually works
Karma is a public score. Upvotes add, downvotes subtract. Reddit shows post karma and comment karma as two numbers. A lot of AutoMod configs check one of them, not the total.
Karma does not make a new post rank higher. It mostly decides whether the post is allowed to exist. That is why people try to buy it: they are locked out of r/something, not because their last thread needed a ranking boost.
How much karma you actually need
Thresholds live in each subreddit’s AutoMod, and mods change them without notice. Treat these as a planning range, then read the rules for the room you care about.
