Why the first hour is the whole game
New is a firehose. A post that does not get votes there never reaches the people who browse Hot. Reddit’s sorts care about how fast votes arrive relative to how old the post is. Fifty votes in forty minutes will beat two hundred votes dribbled over a day.

What a “good” score is
Look at Hot in that subreddit, today. In a 15k community, 40 upvotes can be the daily winner. In a default, the same 40 is invisible. Subscriber count is a hint, not a promise — some huge rooms are half-dead. The activity checker is the honest measurement.

- The displayed score wiggles. That is vote fuzzing, not your post breaking.
- Awards are not a meaningful karma strategy anymore.
- A pile of downvotes in the first minutes is often fatal, even if later readers like it.
